Bespoke Walk In Wardrobes
THE WARDROBE COLOUR
The colour finish that you choose can make a difference to how you precieve your clothes.
Dark wardrobes help clothes to stand out. For example if you wear a lot of bright coloured clothes it will be easier to see different shades and tones especially whites that stand against the dark finish.
White wardrobes are airy and fresh and are as easy to navigate as black. White serves as a neutral background for clothes. This background isn’t attention grabbing and equally helps the clothes stand out against it.
For eccentric personalities coloured finishes of wardrobes can be a particular mood setting technique. If you view your walk in wardrobe as an experience then bright colours is something you can look into.
Darks as much as lights can make the room look visually bigger. The reason for that is because some wardrobes need darker colour to increase visual space.
On the other hand light colours will bounce light off the surface visually expanding the room.

MIRRORS IN YOUR WALK IN WARDROBE
It may be counter intuitive to install a mirror in your it as you may want to exploit every available surface.
A mirror will make the wardrobe feel spacious. A walk in closet is usually an enclosed room the feeling of space will be welcomed.
A full length mirror can be attached to a wall. You can make a storage doors with a mirror attached to it. Not only you will see your final look of your outfit it will also allow the light to bounce, create depth in a room and make it look bigger.
A closet with doors will give you an excellent opportunity to host more than one mirror. If you have that opportunity you will make the space look even bigger.

Illuminated Walk in Closets
We are naturally driven to well lit areas acting as a source of lifting our mood. Some areas are fortunate enough to accommodate a skylight or a window.
However even with a skylight and a window a walk in closet still needs artificial lighting. This is because we’re not always getting ready in the mornings and in addition to that when the seasons change, the winter mornings are still dark.
Your cabinet maker will advise you on the type of light that will be the most suitable for your wardrobe. To do that you’ll be looking at a few different elements that accommodate good lighting. The colours of your clothes may change depending on the type of light you’re viewing it under. Navy, reds, greys and other colours may appear lighter or darker.
FUN FACTS ABOUT LIGHT!
- If the light is on the warmer spectrum it will cast a warmer shadow on the garments. Your goal is to achieve the most genuine colour of the clothes as you possibly can. LED lights are one of the most popular options.
- LED light spectrum varies and depending on the finish of your wardrobes or exhibition stands your designer and cabinet maker will advise you on the best option to achieve the most natural light possible.
- With properly installed lights you’ll be able to view yourself in a mirror without cast shadows that obscure our perception of true colours and shapes.
You’d be surprised how the right type of light can help you choose the clothes, view genuine colours and make it easier to understand if certain pieces of an outfit work together.
It is very common to install light within the shelves, above the railings, on the side walls with the goal to illuminate as much surface area as possible.
Let us build your walk in wardrobe.
Walk in Wardrobe Doors
Whether you need doors in your wardrobe or not is a debatable subject but lets break it down.
If you’re one of those people who only wears clothes that they can see, then you can consider an open door or glass door wardrobe.
The reason people choose doors for their wardrobes is to avoid dust settling in or clothes fading from the available source of light in the wardrobe.
For inspiration don't forget to check out:
However if you want to add surface for a mirror or two, you can choose to section out an area where you can keep your seasonal clothes. An area for storage that won’t be used on daily basis is perfect for that. This way you can have a mirror and keep the seasonal clothes protected.
If the idea of protecting the clothes from the outside is appealing but you’re a visual person, opt in for glass doors. You’ll be able to identify what’s behind the doors.
Glass doors will give you a chance to keep your walk in wardrobe space from being overwhelmed by the furniture giving it a sense of airiness.
On Organising the Interior
Interior of a wardrobe will make up for the most of its price. This is due to all of the materials that goes into designing shelves, baskets, drawers, rails and more.
Let’s break it down into manageable categories to explain exactly type of storage you may need.
Every walk in wardrobe is unique to the person owning it. Due to clothes preferences and lifestyle you’ll be able to design appropriate storage.
Organising shelving for the wardrobes take into account the following:
- The length of the clothes - skirts, dresses, shirts, blouses, trousers
- The width of the clothes - usually the size of the hangers
- Accessories - ties, hats, scarves, jewellery
- Shoes - length of boots, shoes, depth of storage areas
There are a lot of different variations of shelving for the items mentioned above. It is important to understand the interior of closets to know how you’ll be storing clothes.
This is where you’ll be able to have a quick overview of your own style. If you mostly wear trousers, skirts, shirts and blazers you won’t need double hanging sections.

- RAILS
Rails are designed for hanging clothes. Consider how much clothes you can hang and how much you can fold. There are different types of railing. If you’re going for a double tier storage consider pull down wardrobe rail and pull out wardrobe rail. Both are designed to maximise the storage space and the pull method makes it easy to reach clothes. - PULL OUT RACKS
If suits are part of your frequent attire and you need trouser rack you can avail of the pull out rack to accommodate that. - INTERNAL DRAWERS
Internal drawers are versatile and can be used for clothes that can be folded. These drawers can be installed with clear glass so that you can see what’s inside or with frosted glass for decoration. - PULL OUT RACKS
Pull out scarf/belt/tie racks to store accessories usually hanging and easily displayed. - PULL OUT SHOE RACKS
Pull out shoe rack to store your shoes. You can have that integrated into your wardrobe interior or have a separate dedicated shoe storage area with different heights. When dedicating a different area for shoe storage take into consideration the height of the shoes and boots and the depth of the shelves. - STORAGE BASKETS
One more type of storage that most of walk in wardrobe clients aren’t aware of are baskets. They can be pull out storage baskets of various depth.
Wardrobes: His & Hers
Now that you know about all about the interior and exterior of walk in wardrobes it’s time to consider the two sections in it that will be his and hers.
Men and women are very different to what they wear and they will require different types of sections.
Women’s clothes may have long hanging section, bags, different height shoes and jewellery. All of this will be different to what men wear hence different interior design layout of a wardrobe.
To get a clearer idea of what you own and what kind of racks you need the first place to begin with is to cull your wardrobe.
- Keep in mind these key things when you’re culling your wardrobe
- Old clothes with holes in it, even if it’s a pair of jeans that you love
- Clothes that don’t fit you. Don’t wait to loose weight, let it go
- Clothes that is new, don’t feel guilty for not wearing it. If you don’t like it, donate it
- Anything that feels uncomfortable in any way give it away
All of these points indicate that you’re less likely to wear these clothes anyway. Getting rid of that will means that your closet will be clearer to navigate.
When it comes to pricing it is hard to estimate it without knowing what exactly you want. The price will vary on the scale of the room. Whether you want an island and doors. Lighting and finishing of the walk in wardrobe cost extra. It is simply not enough to rely on the overhead lamp, you will need shelf LED lighting.
The majority of the cost will consist from the interior of the closet. Shelves, drawers, racks and rails will consume the most of the material that will determine the cost of your walk in wardrobe.
